Apprentice level Engineering is fairly straightforward. There are 5 recipes to push your Engineering skill up to level 50, the level at which you can train for Journeyman Engineering:

Rough Blasting Powder
Rough Dynamite
Crafted Light Shot
Handful of Copper Bolts
Rough Copper Bomb

With such a limited list, this should be fairly easy to determine which items to build and in what quantity. Let’s do this…

Looking more closely at these items, here they are with the different skill levels:

Orange: The minimum skill required to learn the recipe. Each usage of said skill guarantees a skill-up.
Yellow: The skill level which you cease being guaranteed a skill-up with each successful use.
Green: The skill level where skill-ups will be few and far between.
Gray: The skill level where skill-ups will never be earned.

and the materials required.

<col width="44"></col>
<col width="39"></col>
<col width="38"></col>
<col width="32"></col>
<col width="160"></col>
<col width="144"></col>

Orange

Yellow

Green

Grey

Name

Materials

1

20

30

40

Rough Blasting Powder

1x Rough Stone

1

30

45

60

Rough Dynamite x2

2x Rough Blasting Powder
1x Linen Cloth

1

30

45

60

Crafted Light Shot x200

1x Rough Blasting Powder
1x Copper Bar

30

45

52

60

Handful of Copper Bolts

1x Copper Bar

30

60

75

90

Rough Copper Bomb x2

1x Copper Bar
1x Handful of Copper Bolts
2x Rough Blasting Powder
1x Linen Cloth

Now technically I am less interested in the exact raw materials for each and more interested in the cost of said materials:

<col width="44"></col>
<col width="39"></col>
<col width="38"></col>
<col width="32"></col>
<col width="129"></col>
<col width="105"></col>

Orange

Yellow

Green

Grey

Name

Cost

1

20

30

40

Rough Blasting Powder

50 copper

1

30

45

60

Rough Dynamite x2

5 silver

1

30

45

60

Crafted Light Shot x200

20 silver 50 copper

30

45

52

60

Handful of Copper Bolts

20 silver

30

60

75

90

Rough Copper Bomb x2

45 silver

Note: The cost of Rough Stone is all over the place. Median seems to be about 50 copper, but it can go up to as high as 5 silver.

Obviously once we’ve decided what to build (based on price, etc.), we will still need to build a “shopping list”, but I’m getting ahead of myself. However, while I am ahead of myself, I should mention that Handful of Copper Bolts is used by Engineering Recipes into the 150ish skill level. Many of these recipes otherwise have some fairly expensive materials, so these will only be considered where there are no other options. Most of these low level products have fairly low sell value (both in price and frequency) on the AH and all but the Rough Shot can be sold to a vendor. Therefore the most expedient thing is to just vendor the items as noted below. If I get far enough ahead of the posts, I’ll come back and ensure I’ve taken all of this into account and would pre-adjust my build recommendations based on that data. However, if you are reading this, I most likely did not and may need to adjust things on the fly.

So let’s finally start this thing. Producing the following:

<col width="144"></col>
<col width="84"></col>
<col width="144"></col>

Recipe

Goal

Materials (approximate)

Rough Blasting Powder

25 Engineering

25 Rough Stone

Rough Dynamite

30 Engineering

10 Rought Blasting Powder

5 Linen Cloth

As noted, this should bring you up to a 30 skill level. Once there, sell the Rough Dynamite but keep the Rough Blasting Powder. You’ll need this for your Jorneyman power leveling. Now produce:

<col width="144"></col>
<col width="84"></col>
<col width="144"></col>

Recipe

Goal

Materials (approximate)

Handful of Copper Bolts

50 Engineering

30 Copper Bar

Once you’ve hit 50 Engineering, you can now go train for Journeyman Engineering. Save your Rough Blasting Powder and Handful of Copper Bolts for several recipes at the Journeyman level.

TIme for a party!
Gratz!!!

There are several guides for power leveling Engineering, but it’s:

not clear what methodology was used by the author

not clear that the guides are being updated/maintained

The guides themselves are not bad, per se, but I’d like to go through the steps of creating such a guide with more complete disclosure. I’m telling you up front that I plan to make this an (approximately) 7 part post. That is, 1 post per “level” of Engineering (Apprentice, Journeyman, etc.) plus this lead in post. It should be noted that higher levels of Engineering do have waaaayy more schematics than lower levels, so I may split some of those up further.

NOTE: I may veer off course here and there and still make other posts, but this project alone will keep me going for the next several weeks.

On to my planned methodology:

I will favor items that are cheapest to produce

I will use wow-econ.com to find approximate values for raw materials

Raw materials that are an Engineering produced part that were previously made for leveling up are considered free

I will favor creation of Orange items, exception to this rule are

Creation of simple/cheap items that may be used later as raw materials

Bulk creation of extremely cheap items that will just be vendored

First 5 skill points immediately after skill goes yellow (my experience says these are almost guaranteed)

I will attempt to make as few switches in production queue to make this as simple as possible

Once I’ve got a comprehensive 1 to 450 Engineering leveling guide, I’ll likely make a separate “page” for it (minus the commentary) for later easy reference.

For those that can’t wait, my immediate suggestion is to go here:

http://www.wowwiki.com/Tradeskill_leveling_guides

and choose one. It is very likely that mine will only veer off slightly from these.

For those wondering about my credentials on this subject, other than my first toon with Engineering (ah…my poor level 40 Tauren Hunter), I’ve leveled 4 other toons to maximum level without Engineering and then switched to Engineering. May not be the right way to go for everyone, but I (so far) always level with 2 gathering professions and only switch to some other profession when I’m financially ready. Yes, I know, I’m missing out on the prime time to use many of the cool Engineering gadgets while leveling…maybe next time.

Stay tuned…

This is old news, but worth trotting out again (OK…I admit it, I just got back from vacation and am being lazy). From the PTR Patch Page, here are the changes aimed specifically at Engineering for the 3.2.0 patch:

Added a new Mind Amplification Dish attachment for helmets, allowing engineers to control other humanoid targets. Some restrictions apply: does not work in Arenas, dish sometimes reverses targets, unable to stack with other stat-improving head enchantments and makes your helmet look… stylish?

Added a schematic for a Goblin Welding Beam that can heal friendly mechanical or vehicle units.

Alarm-o-Bot functionality changed. Materials required reduced.

Box of Bombs no longer requires an anvil.

The Cobalt Frag Bomb now incapacitates enemies within a 3-yard radius. A short cast time was added, but they are usable while moving. This change applies to any Cobalt Frag Bombs already created. The existing recipe now makes 3 at a time.

Engineers can now learn to create a portable Wormhole Generator for Northrend. The Wormhole allows them to travel to different locations in Northrend, although the locations are sometimes in dangerous places.

Increased benefits from Hyperspeed Accelerators, Hand-Mounted Pyro Rocket and Reticulated Armor Webbing glove modifications.

Increased the passive bonuses provided by Springy Arachnoweave, Flexweave Underlay and Nitro Boosts.

Increased siege damage caused by Saronite Bombs and the Global Thermal Sapper Charge.

Mote Extractor now has innate tracking for gas clouds while it is in your inventory. Tracking of gas clouds has been removed from goggles.

A new repair bot has been added, and his name is Jeeves. He is the ultimate gentleman robot butler, able to perform all the mundane tasks of repairing, selling and buying junk for your entire raid. Additionally, he can open bank boxes for skilled engineers (350+). Jeeves is not destroyed when used, but due to pressing engagements, can only be summoned once an hour. The schematic for this handsome robot was said to be hidden within the parts of another robot – hoping to be found by an engineer one day.

Nitro Boosts: Now have a 5-second duration.

Potion Injectors now increase the amount gained by 25% when used by engineers. Quantity produced by recipes for Runic Healing and Mana Injectors has been increased.

Reduced the materials needed to create all engineering Dragonlings, and reduced their cooldowns, although they still cannot be used in Arenas.

Significantly reduced the cooldown on MOLL-E.

The Spynocular belt attachment has been changed to a Frag Belt. The Frag Belt periodically produces a Cobalt Frag Bomb that can be used from the belt every 10 minutes (never runs out!).

A Steam-Powered Auctioneer has been added to the Dalaran Like Clockwork engineering shop, allowing access to one’s faction Auction House. The Steam-Powered Auctioneer was programmed with a superiority chip, and will only interact with Grand Master engineers.

Transporter devices are no longer classified as trinkets and can be used directly from your inventory.

The Ultrasafe Bullet Machine and Saronite Arrow Maker schematics have been simplified to create a full stack of the appropriate ammunition. No longer requires an anvil. Reduced the materials required to make this ammunition.

There are also some changes that have indirect effect on Engineers as well. For those with the Engineering mounts:

Mounts

The cast time for summoning any ground mount is now 1.5 seconds, down from 3 seconds.

Expert Riding (Skill 225): Can now be learned at level 60 for 600 gold from trainers in Honor Hold or Thrallmar. Faction discounts now apply (Honor Hold for Alliance; Thrallmar for Horde). Flight speed at this skill level has been increased to 150% of run speed, up from 60%.

Artisan Riding (Skill 300): Faction discounts now apply (Honor Hold or Valiance Expedition for Alliance; Thrallmar or Warsong Offensive for Horde).

For Alliance Engineers finding themselves in Darnassus without an Anvil:

World Environment

Mathiel in Darnassus has finally earned himself enough money from your repair bills that he was able to buy himself an anvil.

And finally, while an Engineer that uses a Potion/Mana injector will get a 25% bonus to amount regained (see above notes), it’s not clear why anybody else would want these injectors since the below note appears to suggest all potions stack to 20.

Alchemy

All stackable potions now stack to 20.

Back in patch 3.1, Engineers received:

High-powered Flashlight
Binds when equipped
Unique-Equipped
Trinket
Requires Level 49
Equip: Improves hit rating by 24 (3.04% @ L49).
Use: Summon a ring of light on a specific location that lasts for 3 min. (1 Hour Cooldown)

This caused lots of forum QQ and controversy, including posts like this:

To Engineers Complaining about the Flashlight

Which, while very amusing, may not be the entire story. Let’s take a closer look at our maligned flashlight.

First, the formalities, where/how do I get this schematic:

Outland:
NPC: Engineering (bookcase) near Loremaster Skosiris (Scryers)
NPC: Technician Mihila (Aldor)
Location: Shattrath

Northrend:
NPC: Binkie Brightgear
Location: Icecrown

Once you’ve trained this schematic (requires 250 Engineering), you need the following to make it:

Tools:
Anvil
Blacksmith Hammer
Arclight Spanner

Reagents:
Thorium Widget x4
Truesilver Bar x6
Essence of Fire x6

That out of the way, the first thing I want to point out is that there is no Engineering requirement to wear/use this trinket. Yes. No Engineering Requirement. Make it for an Alt. Make it for a guild-mate. Make it to sell. Does it sell on the the Auction House? Based on numbers on wowecon.com, this item is typically listed for about 90 gold (note that listed is not the same as sold). The volume reported is very low, so your mileage will likely vary wildly as to whether you can sell this thing on the Auction House. Surprisingly the approximate cost of all raw materials is about 33 gold, so if it does actually sell, you will make a profit. The 33 gold raw material cost approximation is again based on wowecon.com numbers , however these numbers are a little bit more solid since the raw materials do have a fairly high volume.

There is no doubt that as a level 80, there are any number of items better than this, but how about for a level 49? Based purely on trinkets with “Hit Rating” on it (obviously not a fair comparison – but who said I had to be fair), it’s not until level 65 that you will find a trinket with something higher:

wowhead link

Realistically, the most comparable item is:

Royal Seal of Eldre’Thalas
Binds when picked up
Unique
Trinket
+10 Fire Resistance
Classes: Rogue
Equip: Increases your hit rating by 20.

I make no claims of being a WoW theory crafter. Those that want to start down the theory crafting path (and likely find huge holes in my argument) can go here:

Royal Seal of Eldre’Thalas

Binds when picked up

Unique

Trinket

+10 Fire Resistance

Classes: Rogue

Equip: Increases your hit rating by 20 (2.26% @ L54).

“Blessed by the Shen’dralar Ancients.”

http://www.wowwiki.com/Hit#Calculating_miss_rate

to find out what “Hit Rating” actually does for you.

So…

if you are a DPS class
if you are not hit capped at your level
if you don’t have a better trinket option

this little flashlight might actually be a DPS increase for you. You decide if the “on-use” ability is any good…let me know once you’ve stopped laughing if you read my first link.

There are a number of attainable toys that either:

mimic Engineering crafted toys
are toys that seem like they should be Engineering crafted

One of them is the X-52 Rocket Helmet attainable from an Outlands quest.

This beauty comes from a 7 step quest chain. The first step is:

Quest: Help Mama Wheeler
NPC: Papa Wheeler
Zone: Netherstorm

and ends with:

Quest: Back to the Chief!
NPC: Rocket-Chief Fuselage
Zone: Netherstorm

The only challenging quest (depending on level and spec) in the midst of this chain is You, Robot, a level 67 3-person quest. Should be solo-able by most (all?) at level 80. If you completed this chain in the past and for some reason deleted the reward, simply go back to Rocket-Chief Fuselage and he will offer you another X-52 Rocket Helmet.

A few things to keep in mind regarding this toy:

As with all equipped items, there is a cool down between when an item is equipped and when it can first be used. About 30 seconds.

The helmet will apply an on-use de-buff called “To Infinity and Above” which will take away 50% of your full health over 3 ticks while rocketing upwards. In other words, don’t use it if at half health or less (unless you have a pally bubble or some-such to shield you from this damage).

The “Slow Fall” effect which is triggered upon reaching the apex/zenith of the rocket flight will last approximately until you descend back to the point where you triggered the helmet. In other words, don’t do this too high in the air unless you have a plan B (which may just be “I’m going to die!”).

The X-52 Rocket Helmet has a 30 minute cool down.

The on-use effect (the rocket) can only be used in Zones where you can fly (eg. most of Northrend and Outlands).

You pretty much go straight-up and then straight-down.

Now for the fun:

Ejector Seat
First logged example for this idea was on the WoW forums by Konge of Kargath server here. To use, create a macro similar to the following:

/panic
/dismount
/use X-52 Rocket Helmet

Step 1: Ensure your X-52 Rocket Helmet is equipped
Step 2: Mount your Turbo Charged Flying Machine
Step 3: Profit!

Exploding Shoes

Another bit of entertainment is to precede your ground use of the X-52 Rocket Helmet by:

Gnomish Rocket Boots
Goblin Rocket Boots
Rocket Boots Xtreme
Rocket Boots Xtreme Light
Nitro Boosts

Step 1: Use your boots and run.
Step 2: Use your helmet at an appropriate time
Step 3: Profit!

Base Jumping

Looking for more “fun” things to do with your Rocket Helmet? How about some base jumping?

Step 3: Profit!

Today I thought I’d gather together all the Engineering bug fixes/patches since the release of World of Warcraft. These are based strictly on what is documented in the 1.0.2 to the 3.1.3 Patch Notes even though there are some known, undocumented changes. Without further ado…

1.02 (Mysteries of Maraudon)

Gnomish Death Ray ingredients have been changed.

1.03 (Ruins of the Dire Maul)

A new engineering recipe is available in Blackrock Depths for a repair robot. This robot acts as a repair vendor for 10 minutes and will repair and purchase items for normal cost. This will allow dungeon groups and raids to get items repaired and sold without returning to town.

Engineering guns level 40 and above now have attributes on them to bring them in line with the random property guns.

Fused Wiring will now drop more often from target dummies.

Green Lens now requires more ingredients to make, but has special effects rather than just stats on it.

1.04 (The Call to War)

A significant number of additional engineering devices have been added to the world both as new recipes on vendors and as drops on monsters in the higher level (50+) dungeons and in raids.

The level of the Mechanical Dragonlings, Battlechicken, and Bombs dropped by the Goblin Bomb Dropper now scale with your engineering skill, so they will be always useful against enemies. Their damage and health has remained the same.

Some Blasting Powder icons Changed.

Bombs now cause a disorient effect when they go off, this was not working correctly previously.

Flame Deflector and Frost Deflector now do an elemental damage absorb rather than a resistance increase.

Minor Recombobulator now restores health and mana as well as removing polymorph effects.

Target Dummies now generate an initial taunt pulse so creatures will attack them for the first 5 seconds after they are
dropped.

Gnomish Death Ray damage increased slightly and cooldown reduced to 5 minutes.

1.05 (Battlegrounds)

New engineering firework recipe added.

The recipe for the World Enlarger now only makes a single enlarger instead of three.

Two new transporter recipes have been added, with one for gnomish and one for goblin engineers. Gnomish engineers can get their recipe from Gadgetzan, Goblin engineers from Everlook.

Engineering vendors now sell Blacksmith’s Hammers.

Both types of the engineer-made Jumper Cables now share a cooldown. It was never intended to allow a player to use Jumper Cables XL and Jumper Cables within the same period of time.

Solid Dynamite was inadvertently broken in the 1.4 patch to require harder materials than it should. This has been fixed.

Jumper Cables no longer have a chance to break when they fail.

1.06 (Assault on Blackwing Lair)

None

1.07 (Rise of the Blood God)

Only spells and abilities that target enemy units will cancel the World Enlarger effect.

Catseye Goggles have had their stealth detection increased somewhat.

The Gnomish Death Ray now only can be cast if the target is within 20 yards. Previously you could cast this on players outside that range, even though the spell immediately failed.

1.08 (Dragons of Nightmare)

Gnomish Mind Control Cap – Is now subject to diminishing returns in the Charm category.

1.09 (The Gates of Ahn’Qiraj)

The Engineering schematic for the Tranquil Mechanical Yeti now requires a Cured Rugged Hide rather than Ice Thistle E’ko so that both Horde and Alliance Engineers can make the recipe.

Engineers with skill 250 or greater, who have completed Umi Rumplesnicker’s ‘Are We There Yeti?’ quest line, should seek her out again in Everlook.

The Gnomish Death Ray’s backfire will now affect players even if they have an immunity effect, such as Divine Shield.

The Reckless Charge ability of the Goblin Rocket Helmet and Horned Viking Helmet is now considered an incapacitating effect instead of a sleep effect.

The Goblin Mortar’s stun effect now has a description.

1.10 (Storms of Azeroth)

Players that unlearn Engineering or Leatherworking may now respecialize if they decide to relearn the professions.

The Alarm-o-Bot now pulses its detection every 7 seconds rather than every 30 seconds.

Fused Wiring now stacks to 5.

Rocket Clusters now require Solid Blasting Powder and Large Rocket Clusters require Dense Blasting Powder.

Target Dummies now have a much shorter duration, but have significantly more health. They also have a general 3 minute cooldown on their use.

The Goblin Mortar’s maximum range has been increased from 20 yards to 40 yards.

Biznicks 247×127 Accurascope now only affects ranged attacks, and Elemental Sharpening Stones no longer will affect ranged weaponry. The schematic for the Accurascope will now drop once again in the Molten Core.

1.11 (Shadow of the Necropolis)

Grenades and Mortars now are set to use the “Controlled Stun” mechanic so using grenades in conjunction with other stuns (such as Hammer of Justice) may give you diminishing returns.

The materials used in sapper charges have become less stable and now on occasion sapper charges will only affect the user lighting them on fire for a period of time.

A player is now much more likely to break out of the The Reckless Charge effect of the Rocket Helmet early. This is to maintain consistency with all other effects that take control away from a player (Sheep, Stun, Hibernate, etc…). This change only affects players, there is no change in using it against monsters.

When a Paladin is replaced by their Evil Twin due to transporter malfunction, they can no longer revert to their normal self using divine shield.

Tranquil Mechanical Yetis are no longer unique.

We have re-evaluated the mechanics of consumable items in the game and concluded that these should work in a more intuitive manner. As such, most items that can not be equipped with right click abilities have been streamlined into one of three categories. Using an item of a particular category will trigger a shared cooldown among all other items in the same category. The categories break down as follows with category cooldowns as listed.

Potions 2 minutes: This includes items such as Health Potion, Mana Potion, Invisibility Potion and Mighty Rage Potion.

Aggressive 1 minute: This includes items such as explosives, Really Sticky Glue and Discombobulator Ray.

Non-Aggresive 2 minutes: This includes items such as Healthstone, Night Dragon’s Breath, Whipper Root Tuber and Target Dummy.

Many items that can be equipped have had their cooldown category removed and will be controlled exclusively by the item’s self cooldown. For example, the Gnomish Mind Control Cap should no longer trigger the cooldown of the Talisman of Arathor.

The Gnomish Mind Control Cap may now only be used on targets that are not in combat.

1.12 (Drums of War)

Engineering: The damage from sapper charges can now be resisted. The overall DPS of the charges should not be significantly altered from what it currently is.

Engineering: Explosive sheep do fire damage instead of physical damage.

Goblin Land Mines and Compact Harvest Reapers will no longer lock out using other engineering devices until the land mine/reaper dies. Harvest Reaper was given a 10 min self cooldown to prevent too many reapers from being summoned at once.

Fixed a bug that was causing Ice Block to trigger a 5 minute cooldown on the Gnomish Cloaking Device.

2.0.12 (Before the Storm)

Gnomish Mind Control Cap” now has a greater chance of failure against targets over level 60.

“Goblin Rocket Helmet” now has a chance of failure against targets over level 60.

“Flash Bomb” now has a chance of failure against targets over level 60.

Players will no longer lose faction when under the influence of “Mind Control” or the Gnomish Mind Control Cap.

All of the profession-made items that have been created up to now have been given proper stats based on the current expansion item level progression table.

The Backfire effect on the “Net-O-Matic” will no longer break on damage.

2.1.3 (The Black Temple)

11 new epic goggles have been introduced at 350 engineering skill and are available from the trainer. They range from cloth to plate, and have a variety of stats to appeal to most talent specs.

A recipe for Frost Grenades and the Icy Blasting Primers needed to make them are now on engineering trainers.

Engineering recipes can now be placed in engineering bags, as can engineer made fireworks.

Many engineering recipes will now give skillups for longer than they previously did.

An engineering recipe to make Fused Wiring can be found in both Everlook and Shattrath.

Engineering Skill required to make the Felsteel Stabilizer, Hardened Adamantite Tube and Khorium Power Core have been reduced slightly.

Adamantite Shells now require less adamantite and do slightly more damage.

The recipe for Elemental Blasting Powder now gives 4 powder when creating it, though it now requires an additional mote of earth.

Engineers now make 3 Smoke Flares instead of just one when they create them. Also Smoke Flares now have a buy/sell price.

Seaforium now opens locked chests as well as locked doors.

The Consortium Vendor Karaaz now sells the engineering recipe for an Elemental Seaforium Charge if you are revered with them.

The Poultryizer has a smaller chance of getting malfunction effects and is now a superior quality item.

The Nigh Invulnerability Belt now has a smaller chance of failure.

Healing Potion Injectors and Mana Potion Injectors created by engineers now have new icons and the engineering requirement to use them has been reduced.

Goblin Rocket Launcher now has a 2 minute cooldown, and had its casting time reduced to 3.5 sec.

Gnomish Flame Turret now creates 3 turrets instead of 1. Thorium Tube requirement changed to Fel Iron Casing.

Goblin Rocket Launcher: When this item stuns a warrior opponent, it can now trigger Second Wind.

2.2.0 (Voice Chat!)

Reduced the cooldown on the engineer-made Parachute Cloak.

Schematic: Fused Wiring: Vendors who sell this recipe will now properly restock it after a period of time.

2.3.0 (The Gods of Zul’Aman)

All primary profession trainers outside of capitals (Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Enchanting, Engineering, Leatherworking, Tailoring) have been changed to train up to Artisan level (skill level 300) in their respective professions.

The capital cities now possess Artisan level trainers for the primary professions they support, and are surrounded by their newly-dubbed Apprentices where applicable. Please visit your local Master trainer when you wish to train.

Cogspinner Gearcutter in Ironforge and Sovik in Orgrimmar now sell the schematic for the Steam Tonk Controller in a limited supply.

Engineers can now create incredible new flying machines! Find Niobe Whizzlespark in Shadowmoon Valley to learn these fantastic new plans.

Engineering potion injectors no longer require engineering skill to use.

Jumper Cables XL is no longer a trinket.

Materials required to create the Steam Tonk Controller have been reduced. To reflect the reduced requirements, the maximum skill gain has also been reduced somewhat.

So you’ve leveled Engineering to 450 and you’re wondering where to sign-up to get the motorcycle:

Horde: Mechano-hog
Alliance: Mekgineer’s Chopper

Well…it’s easy. But it’ll hurt…

The schematic is a Bind on Pickup recipe sold by:

Horde Schematic: Mechano-hog
NPC: Gara Skullcrush (Borean Tundra)
NPC: Sebastian Crane (Howling Fjord)
Requires: Horde Expedition – Exalted
Cost: 400 GP

Alliance Schematic: Mekgineers’ Chopper
NPC: Logistics Officer Silverstone (Borean Tundra)
NPC: Logistics Officer Brighton (Howling Fjord)
Requires: Alliance Vanguard – Exalted
Cost: 400 GP

As noted, to buy the recipe you must be exalted with, depending on your faction, either Horde Expedition or Alliance Vanguard. These two factions are comprised of four sub-factions:

Horde: Horde Expedition

Comprised of:
The Hand of Vengeance
The Taunka
Warsong Offensive
The Sunreavers

Alliance: Alliance Vanguard

Comprised of:
Explorers’ League
The Frostborn
The Silver Covenant
Valiance Expedition

To gain Exalted reputation with the top level faction, you either need to be Exalted with any two sub-factions or have the equivalent reputation points spread out amongst the sub-factions. Typically doing quests in Northrend will take you far into Revered. To finish up, either:

Do Northrend dungeons without a faction tabard equipped
Do the daily quests offered by a few of the factions

To track progress on your faction grind and to locate available Daily Quests, I would suggest consulting a Reputation Calculator such as the one at the sight:

WowJuJu

Now you’ve finally purchased the recipe and have learned the ability to “make” your motorcyle, what now?

Spend Gold
Spend More Gold
Spend Even More Gold

The raw materials of a motorcycle are as follows:

Titansteel Bar x12
Handful of Cobalt Bolts x40
Arctic Fur x2
Salvaged Iron Golem Parts
Goblin Machined Piston x8
Elementium-plated Exhaust Pipe

The first three are “crafted” respectively by a:

Miner (probably you)
Engineer
Skinner (maybe you)

If purchased on the AH, the cost would be (approximately):

Titansteel Bar x12 = 1,200 GP
Cobalt Bar x20 (assuming average yield on the bolts) = 40 GP
Arctic Fur x2 = 60 GP

Total of 1,300 GP? Painful but not too bad. However, the last 3 items are where you feel the pain unless you are either a) rolling in Gold or b) very lucky in looting bosses in Ulduar (assuming you are even raiding Ulduar which mar or may not be true). If you aren’t lucky enough to find these while raiding Ulduar, take your barrels of cash to::

NPC: Roxi Ramrocket
Zone: The Storm Peaks
Sells: Salvaged Iron Golem Parts for 3,000 GP
Sells: Goblin Machined Piston x8 for 1,000 GP each (or 8,000 GP)
Sells: Elementium-plated Exhaust Pipe (limited supply) for 1,500 GP

This means that in addition to the crafted materials, you need a to spend a minimum of 12,500 GP (not counting the recipe cost) to make this mount. Since Engineering is not required to ride this mount (just to make it) and since there are other Northrend mounts that allows passengers *and* that are much cheaper, you will have to decide whether making (or just buying) one of these is worth it.

It’s a luxury, sure, but don’t you deserve the very best? …ACK!
